Miss Ephemera is at it again…

As we all know, the best things in life are often bedecked in red & white stripes…candy canes, stripey straws, baker’s twine, barber poles, circus tents…  So, when Miss Ephemera whispered in our ear (once again!) and indicated that what she would really, really like in order to set her apart from the crowd was an awning out front, we knew INSTANTLY that it would have to be of the striped variety. Oh what fun!

In order to make this happen, Miss Ephemera will be offering up all sorts of delightful little activities and events in which the proceeds go directly to the awning fund.  To get this thing kick-started, we’re offering little Bags o’ Goodness full of tiny treasures that are absolutely GUARANTEED to make your day a better place to be.  Make sure to pick yours up and become a part-OWNER of our dream-awning!  (How many people can say that they own a Red & White striped awning?!?).

Let’s make another ephemera dream come true!

Green Wall Art for All! and events17 Jun 2010 10:43 am

It’s been awhile, hasn’t it?

Ephemera has been whiling away her summer hours plotting and planning and, at the tip-top of her list of accomplishments, is six months worth of new art for your viewing pleasure!

What’s this all about, you ask?

On July 2nd, we’ll begin a series called “Green Wall Art for All” which will take place on the first Friday of each month from 6-9 pm.  The artwork will be hung all month, mind you, but on those first Fridays, we invite you to meet the artist, eat good food, and drink good drinks!  We anticipate a Big Green Wall filled with the creative renderings of art created right here in your neighborhood and a back room filled with energy!

First up is Miss Emily Phipps on July 2nd.  We are absolutely smitten with her work and absolutely can not wait to introduce you to it!  Better yet, the proceeds from any artwork sold during her show will benefit The Iowa Alliance for Drug Endangered Children.  Mark your calendar and join us!

Our friend Paige has been painting and painting and painting beautiful, light-filled, glowing masterpieces for quite some time.  And, for quite some time, they have been hiding in her not-so-light-filled apartment.  Yesterday afternoon, they came out of hiding and took their proud and dignified places on the sprawling and blank back-room walls of Ephemera.  Tonight, our friend Paige will be showing them off to a small slice of the world.

This is Paige’s first art show, appropriately titled “My First Art Show.”  Today, Miss Ephemera salutes Miss Paige because taking those things that you love the most (so many times those things that you love so secretly and quietly) and showing them off to the world can be such a scary and thrilling thing to do.  “Hello, World!  Here are my paintings all hung on this wall!” or  “Hello, World!  Here is the business that I’ve always wanted to start!” or “Hello, World!  Here is my voice that I’ve always wanted to hear through a microphone!”  Jump, jump, jump!  Whatever it is!  If for no other reason than the FEELING of DOING it.  Show it and tell it (and I promise that your life will feel much more interesting!).

If you are in town, stop by tonight!  We’ll be here admiring from 6:00 until 9:00 pm and would love to have you join us!

Happy Days! and Sweet Treats! and events13 Mar 2010 09:47 am

Karen and I like to dream big dreams.  One of those dreams is that on some fine March 17th, we’ll actually muster enough courage and fortitude to climb out of our nice warm beds to attend a Kegs and Eggs St. Patrick’s Day celebration.  We think that it would lend itself to molding and shaping us into more well-rounded individuals.  There are, however, problems that surround this endeavor.  Like the fact that I find the idea of green beer revolting.  Like the fact that I have a serious aversion to the idea of drinking before 8:00 AM (I am the only lady who made it through five years of college at the University of Iowa without tailgating).  Like the fact that, if everything went fine and dandy, and we actually DID make it to Kegs and Eggs, through time and history, we have proven again and again that in these types of social situations, we exhibit very little self-control and would probably not be able to swing open the doors of ephemera by 10 AM like the responsible shop girls that we typically are.

So, in the meantime, we dip one little toe in, wiggle it around, and see how it feels.  We do this by eating (and serving) Guinness Stout Cupcakes at 10 AM.  Yes, yes!  It’s happening today!  In honor of all things green and Irish-y, we invite you to stop by and start your St. Patrick’s Day preparations a little early.

Not since the days of Valentine Box construction have I been as excited about February 14 as I am this year.  Unless an intriguing mystery man comes sweeping in in the next two weeks, I don’t have any red hot plans for the big love fest so I’m not exactly sure what’s doing it for me this time around.  Perhaps it is the love affair that I continue to have with our new space.  Perhaps it is the fact that I have fallen madly and passionately in love with my new programmable coffee maker that wakes up before I do to brew my first cup of coffee.  It could be crush that I have on the Fish and Chips at Court Avenue Brewery or my newest fling–the Craigslisted desk that suits me perfectly.  Whatever it is, I’m feeling the love.  And, as we all know, love can be a pretty inspiring thing.  The result of the ephemera love fest?  These sweet Love Letter Kits brimming with tiny treasures to create and aid you in your own love letter construction.

Remember, on Saturday, February 6th, we’re hosting Love Potion and Letter Writing.  This is an absolutely FREE event in which we invite you to bring yourself, your friends, and everything you need to create and craft this year’s Valentines.  Of course, our kits will also be available for purchase if you feel so inclined.  We’ll be serving up our favorite Love Potion and a hefty helping of love songs to get you in the mood.

Please tell me you didn’t miss out on the Holiday Promenade!  You’ll have to wait a whole year for another chance to celebrate the start of holiday shopping in the east village!  It was packed!  There were ice skaters galore at Brenton skating plaza, free carriage rides, treats and goodies in the shops, and I believe that santa may have even made an appearance!

I hope you had a chance to try our treats.  You had to act fast because they were gone before 7!  We’ll be more prepared next year!
